Negative Soot Backgrounds

This project shows you how to create a black and white negative image by using soot to create a background.

Materials Needed

One piece of white gloss cardstock 5 " x 4"
A piece of black cardstock 6 1/2" x 5 3/4"
A piece of silver paper 5 1/2" x 4 1/2"
A bottle of silver acrylic paint
A tooth brush
A scissor or rounded corner edger
Dolphin Dreams stamp by Stamp Oasis
Clear spray varnish
Glue
An oil lamp

Directions

Light your oil lamp and pass the gloss, white cardstock over the flame. MAKE SURE TO HOLD THE PAPER FAR ENOUGH AWAY FROM THE FLAME SO THAT IT DOESN'T BURN!! Move the paper so that it catches enough soot to cover the entire page. Handing the paper carefully so you don't smudge it, press the uninked stamp into the soot. When the stamp is removed it will leave a white image on the sooty, black background. Spray with clear varnish to seal.

Using the scissor or corner edger, round off the corners of the silver paper and the stamped cardstock.

Dip the toothbrush into the silver paint and splatter the paint over the black cardstock in a random paper. Once the paint is dry, glue the paper layers together as shown in the photo.
